Portland Trail Blazers center Robin Lopez began customizing his own sneakers during the 2014 NBA Playoffs. As Brant Helms, the team’s head equipment manager, puts it, “Robin is very artistic. He will sit in his locker drawing on his shoes for close to an hour before tipoff and then wear them in a game.”
After self-customizing more than five shoes last postseason, he has begun to apply his artistic designs to his shoes yet again but also to one of his teammate’s signature shoes. In last night’s Game 4 win over the Memphis Grizzlies, Damian Lillard donned a custom adidas D Lillard 1 created by none other than Robin Lopez. The red and white-colored shoe features phrases like, “Lillard Time!” and “Dame Face” in addition to an image of a lion and a microphone, which is inspired by Lillard’s affinity for rap music.
