History of the OG Colorway

When Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Jordan 3 in 1988, he introduced four original colorways that would go on to define the silhouette forever. Three of them pulled directly from the Chicago Bulls palette. The True Blue 3 was the exception, built entirely around a white, blue, and grey color story that had nothing to do with MJ’s team colors and everything to do with proving that the Air Jordan line could stand on its own as a cultural force beyond basketball uniforms. That outlier status is exactly what made the True Blue 3 Jordans special from day one, and MJ reinforced that connection years later when he laced up the colorway during his Washington Wizards era, giving the shoe a second on-court chapter that collectors never forgot.

The retro history of the Jordan True Blue 3s is one of the longest and most layered in the Air Jordan catalog. The first retro arrived in 2001 with Jumpman heel branding replacing the original Nike Air, a change that purists took issue with from the start. A 2009 release followed but landed exclusively in Europe, leaving US collectors on the outside looking in. The 2011 return finally brought the True Blue 3 back stateside, though it still carried the Jumpman heel. It was not until 2016 that Jordan Brand restored the Nike Air branding and came closest to the original 1988 construction, complete with the MJ face box that set a new standard for how the colorway should be retroed. Now in 2026, the True Blue 3s are back for the first time in a decade, marking the 10th anniversary of that 2016 release with an updated mold that addresses the shape and elephant print concerns collectors have raised through every previous retro.

What’s New?

The True Blue 3s build their foundation on a white tumbled leather upper that sets the same clean, premium tone the original 1988 pair established, with cement grey elephant print wrapping the toe box and heel counter in the texture that has defined the Air Jordan 3 since Tinker Hatfield first put it on the silhouette. For 2026, that elephant print has been tuned to match the thinner, more refined application of the 1988 mold, addressing one of the most consistent complaints collectors have raised about every previous retro. True Blue accents land on the midsole, collar, and Nike Air heel tab, threading the colorway’s signature blue through the construction in all the right places without overpowering the clean white base.

The two details that complete the Jordan True Blue 3 story sit at the tongue and the heel. A Varsity Red Jumpman on the tongue adds the only real pop of contrast to the palette, a small but essential detail that ties the shoe back to its OG roots. And at the heel, the restored Nike Air branding closes the loop on everything collectors have been asking for since the Jumpman-era retros of the early 2000s, making the 2026 True Blue 3 Jordans the most faithful version of this colorway that Jordan Brand has ever brought back to retail.
