How DeMarcus Cousins Masters Minimalism Off the Court

DeMarcus Cousins isn’t necessarily anyone’s first guess for who has the most prominent style in the NBA, but he’s figured something out that can apply to the majority of most guys’ wardrobes: nailing a consistent look.

Cousins’ fashion game isn’t flashy, nor is it head turning, but it is both wearable and versatile to pair with a range of sneaker styles. Recently signing with PUMA’s basketball campaign, he’ll probably be wearing mostly PUMA styles from here on out, but before his deal, it’s been evident that he’s found an eclectic way to pair high fashion clothing styles with retro Jordans, Vans, and an array of the more fashion forward styles.

Like most players within the NBA, he’s got layering down to a T. And that’s especially convenient since it is winter and some people still aren’t quite convinced that it’s possible to stay warm and still stand out from the rest in a stylish manner.

Minimalism Madness

Since DeMarcus Cousins keeps it fairly minimal and consistent, his style varies from many of the other players that usually have two to three different styles that they arrive pre-game with. For DeMarcus Cousins, he’s got his look and he sticks to it because he recognizes it works best to pair with his sneaker collection. This isn’t to say that he doesn’t dress well however. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. He might not wear the same styles as the other players, but he’s still wearing the same brands. In his case, he’s leaning towards the more minimalist offerings. AMIRI and Saint Laurent jeans are all the rage amongst NBA players – both of which he’s factored into his own look, despite wide-legged trousers and looser fitting denim finding more of a mainstay in the fashion scene.

Skinny and slim jeans make it easy to find other minimalist pieces to pair with them, as well as adding in a little creativity to your look. This could mean pairing them with a basic flannel and Common Projects sneakers, then layering an embroidered bomber sweater, like Cousins’ Gucci Bee sweater over the top (displayed below). Another aspect about having a minimalist style is that it doesn’t have to be so black and white. While having a maximalist style might mean making a jacket, pants, or footwear the mainstay of the outfit, minimalism is all about recognizing what makes a good accent piece. In the instance of Boogie Cousins, that might be pairing ripped skinny jeans with a bomber jacket and Saint Laurent sneakers, while a graphic tee might be the accent piece that’s layered underneath.

Along with the notion that Boogie Cousins wears the more neutral offerings from all these high-end brands, he’s also picked up on the fact that even labels like OFF-WHITE still make plenty of “regular” pieces that most people are able to wear. They make a series of buffalo plaid wool jackets that pair well with slim denim and low-profile sneakers. The wildest thing about these pieces is that they might be screen-printed with the OFF-WHITE arrows logo on the back.
