A Closer Look at Michael Jordan’s Nike Air Ship “Banned”

Detailed images of Michael Jordan’s original “Banned” Nike Airships from 1984 have surfaced thanks to GoodwinSports. MJ wore the infamous pair during the Chicago Bulls rookie training camp, which is the same pair the NBA memo referenced and prohibited.

This Nike Air Ship “Banned” is constructed from a black base and features red overlays on the Swoosh insignias, lace guards, laces and heel. Red also helps to accent the Nike branding found on the tongue tab and rubber outsole. Completing the design is Michael Jordan’s signature on the collar. The Nike Air Ship “Banned” in the photos is believed to be one of only two pairs that were given to MJ by Nike.

One year later in 1985, Nike debuted the Air Jordan 1 in the now-iconic “Banned” color scheme.
