Performance Review: Reebok Q96

Overview: All in all, I really enjoyed playing in the Reebok Q96. As a longtime fan of Allen Iverson and his signature series, it was awesome to play in a pair of AI kicks that kept up with the current game. From an aerial view, these look just like the Questions, and on foot they feel much better than any retros would.

Technically speaking, the Reebok Q96 gets a ‘B’ when scaled against the modern market. Personally speaking, these felt more like a ‘B+’ or ‘A-‘ when playing. The Iverson endorsement is definitely an intangible plus for me, with signature swag providing extra “it” factor and excitement. Honestly, that is probably a generational thing as expressed in the intro that won’t wow others the same. Considering pure performance, the DMX Foam felt great when playing, though it doesn’t give anything back. The 3D Fuseframe really wraps around the foot and plays well with the leather. As stated in the category breakdown, traction is a standout quality that will please and impress any guard that relies on quickness in the same manner as the OG endorser.

The only major flaw I found while playing in the Q96 was sizing. These run really roomy and should either be tried on or immediately sized down when ordered. In addition to that, I found the insoles to be cut slightly short on the various pairs I tried on or inspected. This small glitch didn’t seem to bother me once playing, but it’s something that could be easily improved upon.

For fans of the latest, greatest technology, the Q96 falls short. For Allen Iverson enthusiasts and the guard that likes a minimal but not too modern sneaker, the Q96 is great. They’re incredibly accessible for both the casual and competitive basketball players due to their simple styling and grounded technology. When laced up tight, I found these to be very snug and form fitting with great court feel. The DMX Foam is a throwback for the player that wants to feel the cushioning while they’re moving but not feel like the cushioning is moving them. For years, I’d loved the idea of playing in a pair of retro Reebok Questions but wasn’t keen on hitting the hardwood in bulky, Hexalite high tops. The Reebok Q96 is ironically the answer I’d been looking for and I’d be willing to bet it outperforms most modern makeovers based on beloved basketball classics.
