Where has customizing taken you so far?

T. Way: Custom-designing shoes has opened doors that otherwise would not have ever been an option to the college kid I was when I first got started, from NBA locker rooms to corporate boardrooms. These past few years I?ve limited myself to only a few sneaker projects per year so that I can focus on the other creative ventures I?m involved in.

Where are you hoping it leads?

T. Way: The sneakers have already led to the building of the T.WAY brand, which features artwork, apparel, and design (www.theTWAYcollection.com). Everyday is a new step towards bigger and better projects that tend to revel themselves when the time is right. All I can do is pray for is for the ability to provide for my family and make work not ever feel like work to me.

What place do customs hold in the sneaker culture?

T. Way: In the sneaker culture, customs are always cycling in terms of their place within it. You cannot replace or outdo the originals. From my perspective, the shoe serves as the ultimate canvas. Left blank, the shoe is already a work of art. With the right design, that work of art transforms into another dimension of ?a work of art.? The ultimate goal is to create a personal piece for the client that no one else can own.

What advice would you give someone interested in customizing?

T. Way: If you have an idea or a passion for something, follow it. Go to bed each night feeling accomplished that you took one step closer to your dream. If you have a hard time sleeping because you?re anxious to take the next step tomorrow, then you?re on the right track. Don?t give up or sell yourself short. DREAM IMPOSSIBLE.
