Dad sneakers were never just chunky. Sure, that’s one type of dad style but certainly not the only mall walkers by a long stretch. Even before the chunky wave registered in the ’90s, slim velcro trainers were a movement in the late ’80s and parallel to chunky trainers run in the decade that followed.
Rei Kawakubo and her label COMME des GARÇONS harken back to that time with its upcoming Nike collaboration for fall/winter 2019. At its core, the shoe is very much like those traditional pairs colored in monotone leather construction with overlaying velcro straps across the center. Kawakubo gives you that, of course, and then a little something extra.

In addition to the three velcro straps, a cuban link extends from the lateral quarter panel to the forefoot where a COMME des GARÇONS pendant interlocked to the medial side of the thick chain. The black leather shoe is the first from the collaborative offering but there will likely be additional colors available.
