History of the Forbidden

On October 18, 1984, the NBA sent Michael Jordan a letter stating that his black and red Nike shoes violated the league’s uniform policy, fining him $5,000 every time he stepped on the court wearing them. Nike saw the moment for what it was and turned it into one of the most powerful marketing campaigns in sneaker history, immortalizing the shoe and the story forever. The Air Jordan 1 was banned before most people even knew what it was, and that rebellious origin became the foundation of everything that followed.

The Banned story returned in 2011 with the Air Jordan 1 High, introducing the now iconic red X on the heel for the first time. That release was originally planned as a wider launch but quietly ended up hitting select outlet locations with little fanfare, making it one of the most underrated Jordan 1 drops of that era and a sleeper pick up for collectors who were paying attention. Now in 2026, the Banned treatment comes to the low top silhouette for the very first time. The Jordan 1 Low Banned carries all the DNA of the original story onto a new canvas, making this one of the most significant Banned 1 Jordan drops in over a decade.

What to Expect

The Banned 1 Lows arrive on an OG cut build with classic Nike Air branding on the tongue, replacing the standard Jumpman logo that collectors have come to expect on modern retros. The iconic red X on the heel returns directly from the 2011 High release, making its low top debut here for the first time. The base stays true to the original Bred blocking with a premium black leather upper and Varsity Red accents throughout.

The storytelling goes beyond the shoe itself. The collar lining reads “IMAGINE” on one side and “IF…?” on the other, nodding directly to the 40th anniversary campaign and the what if legacy of the whole Banned narrative. Inside, the insoles are printed with text referencing October 18, 1984, the day the NBA officially banned Michael Jordan from wearing the black and red colorway in game. Three lace sets in red, black and white give you options straight out of the box. The custom packaging seals the deal with a blacked out box and a painted X graphic front and center, making the Jordan 1 Banned Lows one of the most complete head to toe presentations Jordan Brand has put together in years.
