You can’t stop lightning from striking, and you can’t stop Kevin Durant from scoring. The reigning NBA MVP beats the calm before the storm of early-fall signature launches with the summer unveiling of the Nike KD VII. Designed to make KD lightning quick, the weather analogies are carried over to performance innovation on the newest chapter of the KD line.

Following in the footsteps of the KD VI, the KD VII sports a low-top build. Hyperposite makes its Durant line debut on the heel of the KD VII, with a midfoot strap returning to the line after last lacing the KD II. The biggest technical upgrades from the KD VI to the KD VII come in both the lockdown and cushioning departments. Seamless mesh and Dynamic Flywire aim for a snug fit around the toe box, designed to take better to quick moves. Such styling is backed by encapsulated Zoom Air in the forefoot, backed by visible Zoom Max cushioning in the heel. Designer Leo Chang’s aim was to create a shoe that was quick enough for a point guard to lace up on the perimeter but supportive enough for a power forward to wear when making moves in the paint. That range makes perfect sense when watching Durant’s game, also taking well to the breadth of players that laced up the KD VI during the recent Kicks On Court season.

Like previous KD models, colorway inspiration comes from Durant’s dreams of working as a weatherman to better understand and better inform others on natural disasters. Lightning lends its likeness to the “35,000 Degrees” colorway, paying homage to the temperature of lightning with an electric mango upper and volt accents. Weather will continue to play a role in the inspiration of upcoming launches.
