In addition to the Lucha Libre sneaker pack, Nike announces their 2021 Dia de Los Muertos Collection to celebrate one of Mexico’s most beloved traditions. The collection is centered around the “Siempre Familia” motif which translates to “always family” — a testament to the dedication and unbreakable bonds of family within Mexican culture.
Nike’s 2021 Dia de Los Muertos collection features an Air Force 1 Low and an Air Jordan 1 Mid, as well as apparel. Both sneakers follow themes of the Mictlan, which is the afterlife in Aztec mythology. Mictlan serves as a foundational element of the Dia de Los Muertos holiday and inspired the journey of the nine levels that celebrates the infinite power of family connection.
The Air Force 1 has an embroidered Swoosh with vibrant details that match the leather overlays. Black details appear on the beaded toebox and velvet sockliner, adding an ethereal element to the shoe. The insole features a “Siempre Familia” graphic, which honors the remembrance of family members throughout the Dia de Los Muertos holiday.
The Air Jordan 1 Mid has a black exterior with highlights of embossed Jaguar print, a nod to the Aztec Jaguar warriors. The toebox is filled with a bright red-orange and has tiny razor teeth that run along the toecap. The tongues have corresponding Jumpman stamps that read “Siempre” and “Familia.” To finish, the sneaker is complete with a multicolor embroidered Swoosh that creates an arrow.
The Nike Dia de Muertos Collection will release first in Mexico on October 24 via SNKRS and on October 26 via the Nike App. A global release is set for October 29. The price for the Air Jordan 1 Mid is set at $125, but the price for the Air Force 1 Low is unknown. For more Nike releases and updates on all your favorite sneakers, follow @NiceKicks on Twitter.
