Meaning of the Pan-African Flag

The Pan-African Flag is very familiar to a variety of people but may remain a bit vague to plenty. For starters, the Pan-African flag was predominately adopted in 1920 as a national symbol for the liberation for people of African descant. The flag would become even more popular during the 1960’s civil rights movement and the 1990’s enlightenment of African culture within the United States.

The colors of the Pan-African flag are significant as the red hues represent the blood of those with African ancestry and the lives lost during the fight for liberation. The black represents the black people whose existence as a nation, though not a nation-state is affirmed through the flag. Lastly, the green embodies the wealth of natural resources in Africa.
