Now that Russell Westbrook has stated his peace regarding the return of the Air Jordan 1 “Banned” edition, the shoe’s namesake figure emerged with a few words about the shoe – or rather the color combination – that the NBA simply wouldn’t stand for.

“It’s like a young kid when your parents say you can’t do something, and they wanna do it,” Jordan expressed. “I felt like I wanted to be different, and the league said, ‘Well, we’ve gotta stop that.'”

The NBA famously “banned” the black and red coloring of the shoe Jordan was set to wear in 1985. The rest, as they say, is history.
