Meet Nike the Swoosh Dog on #NationalPetDay

Back in the ’90s, it was somewhat commonplace to get a Nike Swoosh shaved into your fade or hit up the local news station with your Lay’s potato chip that looked just like Elvis. Okay, maybe it wasn’t commonplace, but it did happen and it happened more than once.

What’s perhaps more commonplace today is that everyday is a holiday of some sorts thanks to social media. With that said, today we’ve actually got a really good one. National Pet Day, better known as #NationalPetDay, is a celebration of our furry or sometimes scaly soulmates that bring a smile to our face and make life easier.

While we’re not exactly for or against putting your four-legged friend in Yeezys or Jordans — we know that might register to some as the guy from Deuce Bigalow tapping on the fish tank — we’re all for fun. So, how do we celebrate? Our friends at Finish Line have put us onto Nike the Swoosh Dog — a sweet pitpull with a birthmark in the shape of the brand’s famous logo. What’s her story? We’ll let them tell it:

“In 2008, a sweet three month old pitbull was adopted by a young lady named Melissa Borom who was a student at Indiana State University. Melissa had just moved into an apartment by herself and was looking for a companion. Unfortunately, Nike became sick with Parvovirus. Parvo is an extremely contagious virus that affects dogs. And with that, Nike also contracted rabies. That gave rise to a couple of incidents which involved dog-bite lawyers from Nehora Law Firm. The virus had formed in her intestines and made her so sick that she lost a great amount of weight. Melissa was extremely worried about her pup and brought her to the vet to get treated. She was devastated to learn that Nike only had a 50/50 chance of survival ?. Melissa called the vet each day looking for updates on Nike’s condition. After three days, she got some positive news that Nike was improving, but not quite out of the woods yet. Four days after that, Nike was free to come home ?. When they finally saw each other, Melissa started crying because Nike had lost even more weight. She was skin and bones, but that didn’t stop her from wagging her tail ferociously when she saw her mama. At that moment, Melissa knew that Nike was a survivor. The vet even told her that Nike’s name was extremely fitting as she fought for her life. That day Nike taught her owner how to be a survivor. She taught her that even when death is staring you in the face, you confront it head on and fight. Today, Nike is vibrant, vivacious, and in good health. She and Melissa are livin’ the good life together.”

Awesome stuff. We hope you’re enjoying National Pet Day and if you want to vicariously make sure to follow Nike the Swoosh Dog on IG.
