Last month, rapper IDK pulled up to his old high school to show off his Nike Air Max 97 “Free Coast.” At first, the pair was believed to be an exclusive colorway, but it seems now that the sneaker is apart of the larger IDK x Nike “Free Coast” Collection, which features the Nike Air Max 95.
Consisting of a total of five sneakers, the collection offers one colorway of the Nike Air Max 97 and four colorways of the Nike Air Max 95. The entire collection is inspired by IDK’s parents and their heritages from Ghana and Sierra Leone.
In conjunction with his upcoming album F65, the collection is also centered around the “Free Coast” flag, which IDK made to serve as a reminder for African-Americans to not forget where they came from and the broader topic of slavery. The Free Coast flag blends together elements of the Ghana and Sierra Leone flags, creating a symbolic union that feels optimistic, energetic, and strong.
Using the Free Coast colors, IDK integrated a gradient midstripe within the Nike Air Max 97. The sneaker is otherwise White with Black hits on the laces, Swoosh, and outsole. Finishing details include a full AIR unit midsole, gradient tongue tag, and Red insole. The sneaker comes housed in a matching box with silver foil tissue.
As for the Nike Air Max 95, the sneaker comes in four different colorways, with two main designs that are offered in Black and Sail. One iteration offers unique linework that creates a checkered-like finish on the upper, meanwhile the other edition opts for a simple stripe. All four of the colorways are highlighted with colors from the Free Coast flag using Neon Green, Aqua, and Red. Each pair is complete with removable race-inspired shrouds at the lacing system, branded shoe trees, and a custom shoe box.
Unfortunately, the IDK x Nike “Free Coast” Collection is reserved for friends and family only, but IDK shared on his Discord that his top fans will have a chance to cop a pair from a limited run, as the Air Max 97s will be up for raffle.
