Air Jordan 2

The sequel.

Following the tremendous success of the Air Jordan 1, the Air Jordan 2 saw much anticipation as the second signature shoe for Michael Jordan.  The shoes came following a broken foot injury that Jordan sustained in his second season complete with a full length Nike Air cushioned midsole that was revolutionary being one of the first basketball shoes the feature a soft midsole from heel to toe rather than a more “traditional” for the time rubber cup sole.

The Air Jordan 2 brought a new level of cushioning to the Air Jordan line and was designed by the godfather of Nike Air in basketball shoes – Bruce Kilgore.  Prior to the design of the Air Jordan 2, Bruce Kilgore designed many other great Nike shoes including the legendary Nike Air Force 1 which was the first basketball shoe to feature Nike Air cushioning.

The Air Jordan 2 debuted in the 1986-87 season and was the first Air Jordan shoe to cross the $100 mark – up from $65 for the Air Jordan 1.  The large jump in price was primarily due to manufacturing costs as the original Air Jordan 2 was manufactured in Italy rather than Asia.  Sporting soft leathers and a faux lizard skin, the Air Jordan 2 would cement its legacy as one of the very first basketball shoes to blend the worlds of high fashion and luxury with sports and basketball.

7 Facts about the Air Jordan 2

Along with great sneakers came great success on the court. While wearing the Air Jordan 2, Michael Jordan scored an average of 37.1 points per game and took his first of seven consecutive scoring titles. Jordan also scored 40 points in 9 straight games during the season and also put 61 up against Atlanta Hawks. Along with all the buckets came awards. Next to the Air Jordan 2 in his display case, Jordan can place the slam dunk contest trophy, All-Star Game appearance, and was named to first team All-NBA.

Retro Air Jordan 2 History

The Air Jordan 2 first released as a retro in 1995 following Michael Jordan’s retirement from the NBA.  The Air Jordan 2 was one of three models to release as a retro in 1994 and 1995 before Michael Jordan headed back to the NBA.  The Air Jordan 2 and Air Jordan 2 low both received the retro treatment in 1995 in the White/Black-Red colorway that he wore during the 1987 Slam Dunk Contest.

THE 15 BEST AIR JORDAN 2S OF ALL TIME

The Air Jordan 2 retro has released a number of times since its debut, but is still one of the most polarizing retro Air Jordans from the MJ/Chicago Bulls era with many who adore the shoe and many who are not remotely fans of the shoe.

Like the Air Jordan 1, the Air Jordan 2 had a horrible first appearance as a retro. From discount racks at Footlocker to the back row at Ross, the Air Jordan 2s were abundant at pennies on the dollar. Following the trend of all other re-retros, the Air Jordan 2 was brought back again in its original color White/Black-Red in 2004 and sold quite well. The Air Jordan 2 was also the first retro Jordans to be made in a limited “player exclusive” colorway that was sold to the public. The Melo Jordan 2’s came out in April of 2004 with much success, selling out opening day. The Air Jordan 2 is a pretty tough find for the originals as well as the first retros. Due to its soft midsole, the Air Jordan 2 would crack very easily and either thrown out or demoted to grass cutting status. Every now and again a 1995 retro Air Jordan 2 will pop up; however, it is a rare find in brand new condition.
