Since the start, Nike and Jordan have celebrated Michael Jordan’s rise to greatness from his home state and playing days at North Carolina. But it wasn’t until MJ stepped away from the game that the Air Jordan line would receive its second shoe to sport the UNC colorway.
Following his abrupt exit from the NBA, Nike told the historic story of Michael Jordan on the outsole of the Air Jordan 9 and enlisted the “Powder Blue” colorway of the shoe to tell the story of his time at the University of North Carolina.
One of the most iconic images of Michael during his era away from the game of basketball came by way of a photoshoot that was done for an advertisement for Champs Sports and their collegiate licensed jersey program that they had with Nike Team Sports in 1994. This was the first time that Michael Jordan appeared in an ad in years for an initiative that wasn’t focused around the Jordan line.
Sitting in a blackened room, you see Michael sitting atop a basketball outfitted in a UNC jersey, game shorts, and “Powder Blue” Air Jordan 9s like he is ready to head back to Chapel Hill.
Michael Jordan can once again be seen in a North Carolina Uniform.
Jordan Brand announced the “University Blue” Air Jordan 4 Retro as part of the Spring 2021 Jordan Brand Lineup. This pair of Air Jordan 4s is the first to incorporate the UNC color scheme to the model and does this with a University Blue suede upper, on the tooling and TPU set that is very familiar to fans of the White/Cement Air Jordan 4.
Jordan Brand tells the story of the inspiration of the shoes with a jersey style tag attached to the side of the tongue Jordan Jumpman logo bringing it back to the 1994 advertisement.
While initially thought to drop in the Summer season, these have been pulled up in time for March Madness with a release date set for March 6, 2021.
