Over the course of the last three years, the adidas Ultra Boost series has been one of the most successful in sneakers. The lifestyle focused performance runner has essentially defined multipurpose. An unparalleled running shoe — which adidas claims to be the best running shoe ever — with the ability to serve equally as an everyday wear.
Yet with the release of its fourth edition at the close of 2017, cultural fatigue began to set in. The Ultra Boost became the song everyone loved until pop radio wore it to the ground. We wore the Ultra Boost to the ground. Then, as we often do, pushed it to the side for the next best thing — even if the Ultra Boost was technically still the best thing.
The Ultra Boost 5.0 is up against a harrowing gauntlet; it’s tasked with returning the five-year-old series to cultural prominence. Images of the soon-to-be-released adidas Ultra Boost 5.0 show great promise, as the model has been largely overhauled. This is critical as much of what brought on that aforementioned fatigue is a lack of distinction between previous iterations. Newness seen in these early previews is a very welcome sight.
Central to the shoe’s design and its budding update is its single-panel translucent TPU side panel. Replacing a somewhat dated cage construction, an airy aesthetic adorns this new model that appears far less weighted. In addition, the heel is bolstered by a progressive design update that reaches down to the Boost laden midsole. Very noticeable, too, is the Primeknit pattern, completely reshaping to enhance the silhouette’s design language.
The adidas Ultra Boost 5.0 is reported to release next February.
