Utah Jazz All-Star Donovan Mitchell has officially unveiled his third signature sneaker with adidas Basketball, the adidas D.O.N. Issue #3 “Playground Hoops”, and in celebration, Mitchell and his family cut the ribbon on newly renovated basketball courts at The Children’s Village community center in Dobbs Ferry, New York, where his late grandmother worked.
Each colorway of the D.O.N. Issue #3 will tie back to Mitchell’s childhood and this “Playground Hoops” colorway focuses on growing up in New York and his memories of playing ball on outdoor courts at Children’s Village community center.
“Giving back to the community is one of my main focuses and the fact that I can do this to honor my grandma is really special,” said Mitchell. “The colorways of my shoes are a reflection of my story and what inspires me. For everything to come together the way it has makes this launch even more special.”
Working with local artists, the Mitchell family spent time together designing and painting the courts. The private ribbon-cutting ceremony for the community took place on Friday, July 9 as part of the shoe release. The courts are designed after a Panamanian-inspired Mola artwork after his mother’s heritage with the color palettes and design elements of the Playground Hoops colorway.
The adidas D.O.N. Issue #3 is dressed in a synthetic purple upper with hand-drawn graphics printed throughout, with grey eyelet flaps and what looks to be 3M reflective accenting on the toebox. The 3 stripes are seen towards the heel in gold, with the same hue being used in the liner and hits all over. Donovan’s Spider logo is seen on the tongue, with “Issue #3” printed on the lateral side of said tongue.
As far as cushioning, the Issue #3 looks to use Lightstrike on the midsole, changing it up from Bounce used in the D.O.N. Issue #2. A unique gradient design is seen on the midsole’s lateral side, which wraps down into the bottom of the shoe, which looks to be a TPU stabilizer to prevent rollover.
