As Mother’s Day approaches, adidas and Cincinnati’s UnheardOf are coming together once more to honor family, legacy, and enduring love with their latest collaboration: the Grandma’s Couch 2 Rivalry Low. Launching May 10, this final chapter in UnheardOf’s celebrated “Grandma’s Couch” Rivalry series stands as a touching tribute to Naomi Phillips — better known to many as the internet’s beloved “Sneaker Grandma.”
More than just a sneaker, the Grandma’s Couch 2 Rivalry Low is a heartfelt homage to Naomi’s impact on UnheardOf founder Phil Lipschutz. After Naomi’s passing in 2024, Phil wanted to create something truly special — a symbol of remembrance, gratitude, and love that encourages us to cherish the memories we hold dear.
Built atop a translucent gum rubber outsole, the Grandma’s Couch 2 features a beautiful Baby Pink premium pig suede upper, symbolizing Naomi’s favorite flower, the orchid. In a vibrant nod to life and growth, adidas’ signature 3-Stripes are updated in alternating green and red suede, representing the orchid’s stems and blossoms.
The shoe’s standout detail remains the lush floral embroidery on corduroy panels, each pair adorned with a newly designed, never-before-seen floral pattern based on Naomi’s favorite flowers. Unique to every shoe, no two pairs are exactly alike — just like the memories they represent.
Personal touches abound, including Naomi’s own handwriting embossed on the toecap with the phrase “Dear Naomi” and on the heel counter with “Love Always and Forever,” a touching sign-off Phil used in every card he wrote her. Further honoring her memory, the heel tab features a cursive adidas logo penned by Naomi herself.
Hidden inside, the sneaker’s insoles reveal another layer of intimacy — a sketch by Naomi’s late husband, Charlie Phillips, the same one he used to propose to her over 75 years ago. Adding even more meaning, the reversed lettering on a personal note from Phil acknowledges his lifelong journey with dyslexia, a subtle yet powerful celebration of perseverance and love.
Each of the 600 limited-edition pairs comes housed in a light pink wooden box, evoking the elegance of vintage jewelry and makeup chests — the very kind of luxury Naomi never splurged on for herself.
