Jordan 12 Obsidian: A Look Back at the History
The Air Jordan 12 “Obsidian” debuted in 1997 as one of five original colorways released during Michael Jordan’s historic 1996 to 97 Championship season, and it holds a unique distinction among them as the only colorway MJ never wore on court. Because the Obsidian, University Blue, French Blue, and White palette did not match the Chicago Bulls uniform, the shoe sat off the court entirely, leading many to connect it instead to Jordan’s alma mater at the University of North Carolina, an unofficial nod that has followed the colorway ever since.

The Obsidian 12s finally returned in 2012 as the colorway’s first and only retro, releasing at $160 but landing with mixed reviews from collectors who felt the shape strayed too far from the original 1997 mold. Now in 2027, the Jordan Obsidian 12s are back for a second time and a far more significant occasion, marking the 30th anniversary of the OG release. For collectors who were let down by the 2012 version, the return to the original 1997 construction is the headline, giving the Obsidian 12 Jordans the proper retro treatment they deserved all along.
