Jordan Brand is celebrating Mexico and its Independence Day with the upcoming Air Jordan 5 “El Grito” this fall.

The Air Jordan 5‘s nickname derives from the iconic El Grito de la Independencia (“Cry/Shout of Independence” — also known as El Grito de Dolores or simply El Grito). From 1521, Spain ruled what is now Mexico and was formerly known as New Spain. At midnight on September 16, 1810, priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang his church bell in Dolores, Mexico (renamed Dolores Hidalgo) and gave the call to arms that marked the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence, which lasted until September 28, 1821. Though Mexico wasn’t free until a decade after the war cry, Hidalgo is referred as the figure of independence for Mexico.

Every year, Mexico’s president rings the same bell Hidalgo did and recites El Grito from the balcony overlooking the Zócalo (national plaza) at midnight on September 16. During the recitation, the president calls out the names of the fallen heroes who died during the war. El Grito ends with the president shouting “¡Viva México!” three times followed by the Mexican National Anthem.

This fall, Jordan Brand will pay homage to El Grito with the AJ5. The Air Jordan 5 “El Grito” is speculated to have a diffused taupe upper with dark pony and apple green details. However, the exact color blocking and details are unknown at the time.

The Air Jordan 5 “El Grito” releases in September 7, 2024 via SNKRS and select retailers. A price point has not been disclosed.
