The ASICS Gel Lyte III first released in 1991 as a lightweight performance running shoe. The ASICS Gel Lyte III features Gel cushioning providing maximum comfort, but with adding very little weight to the product. The Gel Lyte III spent many years sitting in the archives at ASICS, but starting in 2006, the shoe returned to the lineup as a casual shoe and was offered to larger retailers where many pairs were clearanced.
Starting in 2007, the ASICS Gel Lyte III was reissued and became a canvas for collaborative projects with stores that include Patta, Mita Sneakers, Solebox, Alife, Slam Jam, Sneaker Freaker, and David Z. In 2009, as part of a special project curated by Ronnie Fieg, three online magazines took part in the Trilogy Project that included Culture Shoq, High Snobiety, and Nice Kicks.
As part of an interesting viral campaign, the world's largest Lite Brite was constructed with depicted the ASICS Gel Lyte III.
