Throwback Thursday: Nike Air Pippen

Scottie Pippen Nike Air Pippen

A few days ago we gave you a sneak peek at the upcoming lineup of Nike Air Pippen retros that included the original “playoff” colorway that Pippen wore in the 1997 NBA Playoffs, but so far, we have not heard or seen anything to indicate that Nike will be bringing back the first color that Scottie wore on the court in White/Black-Silver.

Scottie Pippen was treated with many great sneakers that he was the poster child for including the Nike Air Bounds, Maestros, and a few Uptempo’s to name a few, but he didn’t get his name etched onto a Nike shoe until the second to the last season that he played with MJ. An interesting factoid was that the Nike Air Pippen retailed for $160 back in the day which was the first time that any Nike athlete had a signature shoe that retailed for more than theĀ  Air Jordans (Air Jordan 12 $135).

As we said prior, the Nike Air Pippen will return beginning later this summer, but no word yet whether this colorway will make it out of the Nike vault.

  1. If they gonna retro these they must bring back this colorway along with the black & red they can keep the other two colorways they plan on releasing.

  3. This Sigma from DC rocked these back then at Elizabeth City State Univ. They had the sickest thickest air bubble.

  7. Replace those horrible brown ones for these seriously.

  8. I really hope they drop this colorway…if not I’ll just pick up the black ones…

On a sidenote, I wonder if these will sell well? Someone else had metioned it in the original post that kids these days prolly won’t be into these cause they don’t get the history or the reason they’re being retro’d. To be honest I doubt they get the point of J’s being retro’d, they just cop em cause they’re hot or its the in thing to have. Last time when I went to buy countdown pack I was suprised at how many youger kids were out there, who I have a feeling have never seen a Jordan game as a Bull. Come on peeps if your gonna buy your kids J’s at least make them respect why they’re getting them. I’ve bought my Godson numerous pairs of J’s but please believe he’s watched Jordan games I have recorded or from the DVDs that they have out. He gets why the shoes are important and why its special to get a pair of J’s. Just my thoughts *Jay-Z Tone*

  9. I really like these kicks, but would I buy/rock them nowadays? I’m not so sure. I think they’re a little too expensive and almost too 90s if you get what I mean. I think I’d feel a little silly wearing them in 2008.

    Comment by Dan Love — June 20, 2008 @ 3:27 am

  10. ^^ Interesting perspective but I bet 85% of kids that get AJ’s dont know jack about the history of them. This one dude was all bent up on the XI/XII package that is releasing when I told him the hottest pack dropping was tomorrow. Anyway, he could not explain why the 11/12 pack was so desirable…..only that he wanted it, along with everyone else including me. But still, I know the history and legacy behind the shoes. I just smh at all these children fiending over Jays since I’ve seen a grip of Bulls games, myself, and all their championship runs. I even remember when the Bulls got OWNED by the Pistons on a consistent basis.

    Comment by TechNutt — June 20, 2008 @ 3:34 am

  11. @ Dan Love

So you feel 90ish if you wear retro Pips, but not if you wear retro Jays? And even though you really like them? Same era, my man. This just supports my argument about Jordans being popular, rather than being respected for the history of them.

    Comment by TechNutt — June 20, 2008 @ 3:38 am

  12. If Nike was smart they would quickstrike those classic’s

    Comment by MJSF — June 20, 2008 @ 5:22 am

  13. @ Ian P:

I respect what you’re saying bro. I feel the same way. Its amazing how many kids rock j’s but couldn’t tell you anything about his accolades during his career. Only thing they know is he won 6 Championships.

My cousin in 21. He remembers Jordan from the last two rings he won as a Bull. THE LAST TWO. Nothing before that. None of the years when they fought so hard against the Pistons….nothing.

I guarantee if(when) I have my son/daughter and they get some signature shoes(Jordan, Penny, LJ23) they’re getting a history lesson also.

  15. What bonehead made the call to release that doo doo brown colorway instead of these?

    Comment by nikeindabutt — June 20, 2008 @ 8:14 am

  16. ^ agreed. I hope that we will see the white color in the Spring time. Something that is amazing about these shoes though is the quality of the leather on the upper. Incredibly thick and incredibly soft. Man those were the days…

I just ran the numbers in an inflation calculator and $160 in 1997 would be the equivalent to $209 today just for perspective.

  17. man i remember wanting these…but mom dukes wasnt droppin that much for the kicks..lol

    Comment by Jon Blaze — June 20, 2008 @ 9:31 am

  18. These are nice, they should have retroed these instead of the brown ones for sure. Hey Ian P & Iconradio i really agree with you, these kids don’t know or respect the history of all the retroed kicks or do they care. Everytime they retro a great pair of kicks it just reminds me of when that particular player (Jordan, Pip, Penny, Sir Charles, etc.) wore them and how great they were when they played in them.

  22. These were by far the best color way for me. I really liked these and it would be nice if they released this one instead of the brown color way. I agree with you about the leather on these as well Matt. It was a well put together shoe. It almost reminds me of the air max uptempo 2 which was a very comfortable shoe as well (Do any of you remember those????)

    Comment by Pastor Troy — June 20, 2008 @ 2:01 pm

  23. ^ Those were great shoes as well. I love how so many ppl say a “big man’s shoe” can’t sell, but what do you call the Uptempos?! That shoe has power forward and in-the-paint written all over them with a big, sturdy, leather upper and full length Air Max!

  27. i’d cop quick and easily pippen was always one of my favorites from the old school bulls im only 20 but i remember those games like yesterday hope they release the ones wit black and red

    Comment by shoehead — June 20, 2008 @ 7:46 pm

  28. All you guys wanna know something cool…maybe Matt already knows this but the shoes of these that Scottie wore during the season didn’t have the air-sole unit present. Instead, they were filled with the EVA midsole and inside the midsole was a zoom air unit. Because Scottie Pippen preferred zoom air over the air sole.
