The best fashion designers aren’t typically those classically trained to be one. Rei Kawakubo created COMME des GARÇONS back in 1969 without any technical training or educational doctrine backing her efforts. Instead, she studied art and literature at Keio University in Minato, Tokyo, largely known as the eldest institute of higher learning in Japan.

From there, Kawakubo open her first CDG store in 1975 in Tokyo beginning with just womenswear, later adding men’s in 1978. Her brand soared, heralded for its avant-garde aesthetic that famously debuted on the runway during a Paris Fashion show in 1981. Decades later in 2004, after many CDG storefronts already littered the globe, Kawakubo created Dover Street Market – a retail haven for her own designs and complimentary brands first located on Dover Street in Mayfair, London.

Kawakubo’s thriving multi-million dollar brand and staggering global retail presence begin to dabble in limited edition sneaker collaborations in the late 2000’s. Working with Nike, Converse and few others, Rei’s masterful eye for design and her ability to see what most couldn’t, positioned her among the most sought after collaborators in sneaker culture.

Today, on International Womens Day, we highlight her best COMME des GARÇONS and Dover Street Market collaborations to date.
