Nike Air Tech Challenge “Agassi” - A Retro Let Down
| Many sneakerheads rejoiced when news broke out that the Nike Air Tech Challenge was going to be retroed. This was the shoe that Andre Agassi wore more than a decade ago in the younger part of his career.
Sadly, photos of the actual shoes have surfaced thanks to jmadidas2001 @ NikeTalk, and the shoes are not even close to the originals in terms of color. The “Hot Lime” has been replaced with a golden maize and the neon blue has been replaced with a much darker shade. Taking away the original “loud” colors these shoes have takes away alot of the history that this sneaker. The way these colors changed made it go from a early 90’s colorway to Pittsburgh Steelers with a dash of an ugly shade of blue. I am happy to see that Nike listened to collectors wishes, but I am angered to see that they put in so little effort to get the colors correct. As one of my friends said, “another half-assed retro.” |

Looks like Nike is following the Footsteps of the JB company put messing up retro shoes with new colors… ex. Retro V Sliver Green Bean/ Olive whatever they are. all retro shoes should be re released in thier orignal colors not new experiment colors
Comment by James — October 10, 2006 @ 10:38 pm
Wow…Nike ruined this release. Instead of selling, these will sit on shelves.
Comment by flatsole — October 10, 2006 @ 10:56 pm
what happened to the black part in the bottom of the sneaker
Comment by J — October 10, 2006 @ 11:04 pm
J,
I just noticed that too. They didn’t even get the midsole correct on the shoes either.
Comment by Matt — October 10, 2006 @ 11:05 pm

I would cop, some obv omissions, like the faded tennis ball in the back…but like i said, i would cop.

The shoe isn’t as bad as the pic makes it look. I saw the sample and its much closer to the original yellow than the pic makes it appear. To me the biggest let down was the back. I am a huge Agassi fan and I was really dissapointed to see the updates challenge court logo.
Comment by GODFATHERofSOLE — October 11, 2006 @ 12:03 am
I’m kinda upset at the fact that the orginal colors aren’t on the kix but all the new colors that nike has are more richer and truer then colors in the 90s
Comment by rich — October 11, 2006 @ 6:54 am
come on now, yall must be young those nike retros are hot………..
Comment by milwaukee boi — October 11, 2006 @ 9:45 am
THis is the worst thing I’ve ever seen. Shame on you NIKE.
Comment by Paladin — October 11, 2006 @ 11:59 am
I am indeed a bit upset with Nike over this…hopefully these pictures don’t do justice. I’m actually more pissed off over the new “tennis ball” symbol on the back then I am over the new color…
Thats like taking the jumpman off of a Jordan shoe and putting on a retarded Jerry West (nba man) laying it up…
Comment by Biggins — October 11, 2006 @ 12:23 pm
damn i was really looking forward to these.how can nike leave out that tennis ball painting that was on the og’s .i hope nike makes big changes.
Comment by GzUs360 — October 11, 2006 @ 12:47 pm

Comment by Mr.FAN — October 11, 2006 @ 8:33 pm
i agree with mr fan . they might have to do things slightly different also cause of the royalties to agassi they might be trying to avoid them.
Comment by owen — October 11, 2006 @ 9:37 pm
I’m in agreement all around…
1) I’m happy they brought back this shoe…and look forward to more of these types of releases…personally I just think Nike should re-release every single f’ing shoe they ever made with at least one original color for each one.
2) They probably dont have 100% rights to that particular “agassi symbol”, thus the new symbol…
3) I’ll probably get them b/c I have issues and cant stop buying retros
4) Hopefully the colors will be different, anybody know about other colors? The OG purple?
Comment by Biggins — October 12, 2006 @ 12:10 pm
NIKE IS MESSIN’ UP!! I was pissed about the horrible material on their new sneakers, now they’re switchin’ up colors…
Comment by Jrillera — October 13, 2006 @ 12:26 pm
dude,,they keep trying to make things different for the integrity of ogs…man come on anyone who owns ogs know that there either yellow or cracked,,,i assure you people will know the difference…so nike might want to make there retros look like the actual shoe that there retroing
Comment by gold9oh — October 13, 2006 @ 5:13 pm

Comment by dat boi gutta — October 23, 2006 @ 8:29 pm
Listen, young ones…this sneaker is one of the main reason we have exciting colors in present day sneakers …this was also one of the sneakers that broke the normal color scheme of sneakers cuz Andre Agassi was always wearing rebellious colours in stoggy tennis back then…this is what nike used to represent his rebellious nature…same with paying the fines for MJ in the NBA…think out the box ya **itches
Comment by Pantyraider — October 30, 2006 @ 10:55 pm
def gonna cop and wear for spring tennis season.
Comment by BD4 — November 2, 2006 @ 6:00 pm

Do they still have the durathane rubber toe??
Comment by Justin — January 24, 2007 @ 5:41 pm
You guys crack me up. All everyone does is complain and whine.
Personally, having seen them in person, the color is off, but not by that much. i will be buying a pair, and i am glad to have the opportunity.
You need to understand that a retro is a retro, its not OG. if it were an exact duplicate, it would dishonor the original. if you want OG, then dig deep into those pockets and buy an OG.
i also love the “hardcore-hood-speak” on here.. “dis, dat, da” lol.. you kids really crack me up.
what was the last shoe any of you liked?
