Bathing Ape clothing was launched in 1993 in Tokyo, Japan by entrepreneur/designer/business guru Nigo. The brand was the first of its kind for Japanese urban/hip hop clothing. Nigo had a policy when he started the brand and that was to make the customer feel greatful to have the opportunity to buy his products. Bathing Ape clothing was incredibly limited. The T-shirts would not be made in numbers larger than 100 which meant you were pretty much guaranteed to never see anyone else wearing the same Bathing Ape clothing that you bought.

Bathing Ape clothing has always taken a different approach than other brands. Many of the Bathing Ape clothing items play take a sarcastic look at something else popular. Many of the Bathing Ape T-shirts have dual meanings or are just incredibly clever. The most famouse logo of Bathing Ape clothing is the Ape Bape that is on most of Nigo's early work.
