Air Jordan 4 Black/Red Retro Comparison
 This weekend the Black/Red Air Jordan 4 returns for the first time in almost a decade. The last time this shoe released was when it was the first retro released after Jordan’s second departure from the NBA. Though many heads are amped for the long awaited return of the shoe, there are many who are not pleased with the changes made to the shoes.
We sat down with both the ‘99 and the ‘08 retros to get some good comparison shots so that you can see for yourself and decide if the changes are enough to pass on a classic. The most noticeable difference between the shoes was the back tab with a Jumpman rather than the Nike Air logo. Other differences we noticed were the netting on the side and tongue, lace piece at toe, the tongue, and a few color differences. The Air Jordan 4 Black/Red will release in the Jordan 4/19 Countdown Package Saturday, July 19th officially; however, many stores have started selling them early in-store and on eBay. |

That first and last photo is INSANE! I love focusing in on the Nike Air logo and leaving the jumpman blurred. Very impressive.
For the record I still have a pair of ’99s on ice so no need for this package

The way it seems to me is that these are very minor changes, but nothing really to get upset sbout anyways. If someone thinks that those little changes are enough not to get them then they just dont have the money to get them, so they hate. But good job JB on the classic!!

Seeing the comparison i am now convinced that some people are WAY too obsessed with having it be EXACTLY like the OGs. It’s essentially the same thing, both r JB-produced and the visible differences r minute.

It’s a def cop for these! But I do HATE the 19’s. Owell. It’s a love/hate pack for sure. I like how the 99′ jumpman on the tounge is fit and the 08′ jumpman got himself a little gut! You callin MJ out on that or what?! Haha!

this should dispel the talk about them looking cheap. they are 90% the same. except for the lace tabs, the nike check on the back, an on the bottom. they are close. so please stop saying they look cheap or fake. i have no problem with these. i just dont like how both shoes are the same colors

What happened from 1999 to 2008 to make the shoe different? Do they redesign it to make it different on purpose? You would think it would be the same exact sneaker minus the NIKE AIR.
The 99′ retro’s are Classics. The CDP IV’s are the uglier twin brother.

imshining yeah, me too, i would’ve prefered the white n gray 19’s too. im not the biggest fan of them, but i liked that colorway. if i get them these would be the highest numbered jordan i ever had.i had all of them 1-16 minus the 15’s

I got folded over yesterday for the IVs and I really like the XIXs, but no way was I going to pay $450 to my local spot for a CDP 5 days before release.

never really got into the bulls color way too much but the shoes are fresh my boy was telling me he will not touch the packs witha jordan symbol on it because nike air is better on the back which is true but I would have to get my hands on a pair to tell the differences one thing to see in high def it is another thing the notice thesubtle differences.

what annoys me is when these self-proclaimed Jordan afficionados go on these threads to complain about how terrible the retro’s look and then brag about their extensive OG or older retro releases they have in their collections. not everyone is 35 years old and has had the necessary funds to begin collecting J’s since before Jordan’s 1st retirement. If yall have mad OGs and older retro’s good for you, n why waste people’s time telling them how terrible the new stuff is–not like u have any desire to expand the collection anyway

these 4’s are fire. their is slight difference with the lace holders, the mesh angle, tongue and of course, the obvious, the jumpman, but i have no problems with that. I honestly think the lace holders and the jumpman look better than the 99 retro style.

I think I’m going to pass on this package for the simple fact that I bought the white and all black 4s that released like 2 or more years ago. I regretted getting both of those from Modell’s and i will regret this one. I know i will catch heat for saying i wont buy them but i cant stand suede or nu buck J’s, they get lint all over them and they get mad dusty and fade. On top i feel like the material is cheap and they’re just too flimsy. Definitely not worth $310 in my opinion. Ill wait for the 3’s and 20’s. So with that said…that poor soul that normally wouldn’t of got his 11.5 or 12 can impress his girl and friends with his 4/19 CDP!

i live in canada, so lets say i got the cdp for $316 flat (which i did with a boy hookup =P) these 4s are still hot AS WELL AS THE 19s…basically that’s $158 per shoe…some haters up there wont get 19s n say they’d rather copp retro 99’s or OGs for 6-8 bills since they’re aready spending $316 (for argument sake)…that’s $300-$500 more just for the OG or ‘99 retro?! ^I dont know if the 99 IV retro’s were ever “hated”…I’m pretty sure they sold out fairly quickly after releasing, but I think I understand what you’re trying to say.
I’ll have to feel/see a pair of these 08 IV’s in person before really making a true comparison with my own 99’s. I have the Military Blues/Mars Blackmon IV’s…and I’m sorry, they just don’t feel or look as good as the 99 retro. Just an opinion, not fact.
This is one of the greatest J’s/colorways…
Nike Air logo or not, you could still make Craig Ehlo & the Cavs look like chumps in these.

I don’t know WHERE in the HELL you got that info from, but please do tell. Because that colorway of the IV’s have ALWAYS been a highly sought after colorway, especially those, like myself, who actually WATCHED MJ play in them.
I sit and watch episodes of A Different World, and STILL get googly eyed over them, when ever Dwayne Wayne or Ron Johnson rocks them.

I had a pair of the Black and Gray IV’s.. I wore them my 8th grade year of basketball and I still hold history their. I know Jordan said, “it’s no the shoes you wear it what you do in them.” I cant find my IV’s anywhere so I might think about geting this pack. Hopefully my friend will go in half with me because i have no need for the 19’s.

Heres what i see the diffrence in them
The 08′ shoe Paint looks cheaper then the 99′
The jumpman on the tounge is a slight diffrent color
99′ pair has better quality the 08′
(If you guys have’nt noticed.)

It’s amazing how everyone complains about the Retros not resembling the previous version 100%, but I’m willing to bet my entire collection, that the next time these come out, everyone’s gonna be complaining “these look like crap compared to the ’08s”.
One more thing- I seriously don’t see why everyone is complaining about the Nike Air. People, it’s not coming back anytime soon. The company is trying to set itself apart from Nike. This would be a step backwards. Besides, I think the Jumpman w/o “Air” looks pretty good. If you really want Nike Air on your IVs, buy the ‘99 version or even better, the OGs.

people may feel that the differences are subtle..and thats cool. but if anyone has there 99 retro, and has a pair of mars or a current 4, put one of each on at the same time and look down..you’ll see there is a huge difference in the shape and fit of the shoe,,,thats the biggest issue

To add to the difference listed by kidxsole…
- Length of the ‘08 is longer than the ‘99 (sole wise)
- Height is shorter on the ‘08
- Heel tab goes up higher than the ‘99 (due to it’s actual height)
- Netting is horizontal, not angled
- Jumpman logo, stitched on the tongue is bigger on the ‘99 as well as there isn’t much of the underneath side (red) shown on the ‘99 vs. the ‘08
- Toe lace tab has changes
Still, all in all, I love the colorway, as many of us heads do, but there’s still a lot that differences with this shoe (no matter the subtleties) that will turn many off of with these.
Especially those with the ‘99 retro.
And even though I never owned the OG nor the ‘99 retro, wearing the Mars IV is VERY uncomfortable. The stitching from the netting on the toe, rubs against my foot. Meaning the she lacks in quality of production.
I still rock ‘em though; nevertheless.

As much as I don’t care about the logo on the back, your point is 100% dead on. I have to agree with you that is what just doesnt look right with the Jordan 3 and Jordan 4 with a jumpman on the back compared to others because the TPU heel tab was designed with a larger logo to fit.

I think some points are being missed here. Its not as if those who are critical of the 08 retro DO NOT want to see Jordan Brand do well, or DO NOT anticipate on buying any more Nike or Jordan shoes based on these retro’s being released. If anything, its kind of a compliment in some ways to the brand when fans of these shoes are able to have in depth conversations about extremely subtle differences regarding shoes that are almost 10 years old.
I will say this. Like some of you on this posting, I have owned the OG, 99 and Current released IV. And the differences between the OG AND 99 are VERY, VERY minimal if ANY at all. You CANNOT say the same thing about the 2008 retro. Thats almost fact.
I love Air Jordans and the “jumpman” logo wont necessarily stop me from buying JB retros (although it has for a few)…but that doesnt mean I’ll covet them the way I do my 94/99/2000/2001 retros (1/II/III/IV/V/VI). You can call me a “hater” or what ever the hell else you want to, but I’d consider myself loyal to the brand, if anything.

All the retro IV’s have a toe that’s slightly flatter then the original. I know I’m gettin’ picky here, but the flat toe thing always bothered me. But don’t think I’m suggesting that these ain’t hot. Straight-up fire!

jordan put on weight on the tongue for the 08’s lol but they are both sick sneakers. i actually like the jumpmans on the back but the quality is cheap. i’m still buying it on the 19th.

i mean c,mon wat real differance can u tell besides the major one the NIKE AIR. of coarse OG is always going to look better but that was then, and this is now, so good job JB do wat u do. to all the big time collectors that have OGs and have been collecting for that long who are fortunate enough to have the 99 retros, good for you. but just cause you have them doues not mean you can judge bad for a jumpman logo in 08. so stop the hating and enjoy the classics being REBORN instead of hating on them.

screw me sideways but i think the “minor changes” took away from the overall shape of the shoe for me.
because i look at shoes almost from the aspect of art it was easy for me to say i could tell a noticeable difference between the two pairs. so personally i’d rather cop ’99s then find myself stuck with 19s

I see the minor chnages in the retros. Being that I grew up on Jordans I wish the would stick to the original spec when they retro. I hate the Jumpman on the back of the IV’s but it is Jordan brand now. Just makes the shoe look like it came from a flea market or bootlegger. But overall its still worthing of coping. Im gonna have to pass with on the package due to the economic state. But if I can find these solo They will be in my collection.

Extremely low quality on Nike’s behalf, what a shame…I like the IV’s and the colorway but this particular release of the shoe disappointing and is an embarrassment to american industry, in much the same way modern American automobiles became in the last 20 years. I wonder how does a company go from such a commitment to high standards and quality to something like this. Weak quality. Nike please stop playing, i know somebody in corporate has to be combing this…ridiculous

i went to a local spot and i saw them on display the 4s look a little cheap i was going to cop but iam going to pass 19s dont look bad my fav 4s are the millatary ones i could have copped the pack today at retail price $310.00

i’ve got the OG bred 4s but theyre too cracked to wear =[
the 08 retros look longer but i guess thats because theyre different sizes.
i migh pass on that pack anyway.

i copped mine on saturday, and yes even tho they dont got the nike air on the back and do got some minimal changes, i am not disappointed at all, these kicks deff are fire, and i thought i wasnt gonna like the twentys but ima also have to say jb didnt do a bad job i was thinkin of getting rid of em but after seeing them in person i had a change of heart, ima have to give this pack a two thumbs up
