Throwback Thursday: Nike Air Jordan 1

It all started at one.

Next year Jordan Brand will celebrate an unprecedented 25th anniversary of the Air Jordan series of shoes. Earlier today we all caught a glimpse of the upcoming Air Jordan 2010, but for this Throwback Thursday, I thought it was an appropriate time to rewind things back to where it all began – the Nike Air Jordan 1.

Coming out of school Michael Jordan had tons of buzz surrounding him from his play at NC, to his Olympic Gold in the summer of ’84, but the minute Jordan’s shoes were banned by the NBA, buzz for much more than just Mike was generated. Though the shoes that technically were banned by the NBA were the Black/Red Nike Air Ships that MJ wore for the first part of his rookie year, the Nike Air Jordan 1′s were at the focal point of an extremely creative campaign by Nike.

As you know, the Air Jordan line has changed tremendously since the beginning, but sometimes there is nothing better than the original.

andrew, the quality aspect you speak of is the difference from real leather and synthetic leather.

I bought the recent retro package of the banned red/black and Celtic colorways.
I like wearing them when I can but I rarely do for fear of getting them messed up.
I’ve already played in the Celtic ones once (on wood not blacktop). Only thing I can recommend is to wear extra comfy jordan socks with them or the rigid antiquated feel of the shoe will start to get to you. Once broken in though, I know they’ll be one of my favorites to take out on to the court. But I doubt they’ll outdo my team Jordan 2.5 fusions for court performance. They are probably the most underrated Jordans made as far as comfort and court performance is concerned.

I remember standing in my grandmother’s kitchen as a kid and watching the commerical for these shoes and being in awe of how great they were! I asked my mother for a pair and she said no they cost to much! They were only 65 dollars! Those were the good days!

I remeber having to beg my Mom for these joints. I copped the red/black when they retroed them in ’94. The original OG joints that started everything!

My dad has a fresh pair of OG AJ1's, surprisingly it's still in mint condition… but it's in size 12 so I can't wear em. He said he got it from back in the days… i wish there were some dead stocks in size 9's. Deng!
