Should LeBron James Give Up #23 Jersey?

Sneaker Synopsis: LeBron James to Give Up #23In what could be the sneaker marketing move of the century, LeBron James announced in a post-game interview last night that to honor Michael Jordan, he’ll not wear the same jersey number.

Pat Riley, President of the Miami Heat, hung Michael Jordan’s 23 jersey in the Heat’s arena, paying tribute to a player who never even played for them. Riley contends that Jordan is hands down the best player ever and that his jersey should be hung league-wide. James, whose Cavs beat the Heat last night, maintains the same theory, saying that no player should wear 23, and the league should retire Jordan’s jersey, a la the Jackie Robinson treatment. In the same interview, he said he planned to wear 6 next year, which he wore in the Olympics in 2008, and to start a petition saying that no player should ever wear 23 again.

The show of respect by LeBron is not only humbling, but it has very interesting marketing implications for Nike, LeBron and Jordan Brand. In this Sneaker Synopsis, we look at the possible inspirations and outcomes of the move to the number 6.

You’ll recall that in 2007, Kobe Bryant wore a new number without switching teams. His change to 24 from 8 had numerous explanations. A very popular explanation is that the move to 24 was meant to one-up MJ’s 23. Consider the possibility that this is true and it puts a very new spin on the Kobe vs. LeBron battle that dominates NBA talk–Kobe competes while LeBron gives tribute.

Is LeBron looking to pay tribute to MJ only, or to further separate himself, as a player, in the span of history? Any player who has ever worn 23 has drawn comparisons to the great one, coming up short every time. With all his potential, could LeBron ever really be content with being remembered as “the other 23?”

Reasons for the switch to the number 6 vary. From an on-court perspective, LeBron reached his here-in peak in 2008, when he won a gold medal with Team USA in the number 6 uniform. But the number is more than just related to his own performances–”My second-favorite player was Julius Erving, and he wore No. 6,” James said. “I wore 32 in high school because Dr. J wore it at first. My first child was born on Oct. 6, it’s my Olympic number, my second child was born in June.” It’s clear that the reasons for the number 6 are numerous, but it is impossible to assume that Nike, marketing and the LBJ brand don’t play some part in this.

If LeBron changes numbers, a new logo will have to be created to replace the LJ23 Crown logo currently used. Associated branding must also be changes on all goods, which are multi-million dollar products for Nike and James. A new logo and number means LBJ fans “have to” replace their old gear.

It also means a new marketing approach for King James. With Kobe’s signature line expanding, and the recent acquisition of D-Wade by Jordan, things are getting crowded at the top. From a marketing perspective, Nike must appropriately place all of its stars along a pricing scale. Clearly, LeBron is at the top, with Kobe trailing closely and Kevin Durant further down. With a load of Wade marketing expected for Jordan Brand this year and his approaching first signature silhouette, a number change for LeBron is a great reason to “reintroduce” one of the most marketable players ever and re-saturate the airwaves with a new campaign.

The number change seemingly arose out of thin air last night, but carries major implications. Also, consider that we don’t even know where LeBron will be playing. A potential new team means there could be even more reasons to buy new gear. Stay tuned for more updates though March, when the deadline for a jersey number change is due to the NBA.

Marketing move or genuine MJ tribute? As much talk as there has been about LeBron to NY, perhaps there will be some new chatter about LeBron teaming up with D Wade in MIA? What do you feel are the reasons LeBron will or will not switch numbers for 2010 and on?

  • fittednoob

Uhh, no. He needs to stick to that 23

  • th

always needs to be in the spotlight – i hope that guy never wins a ring during his career.

  • Bryan

i think everybody needs go along with him on this. its just paying respects to the GREATEST ATHLETE EVER

  • ding dong

um no this is stupid than they shouldl retire 24 after kobe retires

  • sgibbs23

screw that! 23 is the best # ever!!!!!!!! wear the number lebron!!!!

  • Neezy!

“Ding Dong” is the perfect name for your ass. – SMH!

And “th” this has nothing to do with him wanting to be in the spotlight. If he DOES, isn’t he deserving of that? Did you even SEE the interview and WHY he said what was said?

Obviously, MJ doesn’t mind him being in the “spotlight” seeing as though he went TO the Miami game to WATCH LeBron, as well as D. Wade.

    Bonehead.

  • SLM

LaBron, should keep the number…there is only going to be one Michael Jordan and there will only be one Labron James… same number but two great players of the NBA…

  • 216

There should be a Jackie Robinson deal here with the NBA

  • NuNu-luv-LB

i think that Lebron is right about no one every wearing the #23 because michael jordan made that number very sucessful that’s his # he was the best player in the game . Everyone was always saying that Lebron was the next michael jordan that is not true he is Lebron James the best player in the game know so for him to gain respect for his # and himself he made the right move. when people hear and see the #23 in the basketball world they first think michael jordan dont get me wrong michael jordan was my favorite player i loved to watch him play but it’s Lebron turn know. God gave him a gift that is shining on tv all over the world so when its time to retire and go into the hall of fame he would have made the #6 a good number. Lebron James is one of those persons that you just love to sit and watch play the game of basketball he makes everything happen that’s why i never miss a game so go ahead and let #6 be his # thats just another jersey that i would have to buy and dont mind doing so because at game time lebron is still going to make it happen. A.K.A NuNu-luv-LB

  • NuNu-luv-LB

how could you say he always need to be in the spotlight he is a 24yr old man who has worked his ass off to get here. so each and every night he plays he is not showing off he is just showing what god gave him to show us. that’s what’s wrong with people 2day they dont respect people for what they do because if that was your family member and he was doing that u would have nothing to say. i just made me mad because the man is talented and just give him respect.

  • dAsh.

its a great idea but at the same time i think LeBron is being a liiitle too humble..its wutever

  • N i r v a n a

I thought this fool is done discussing his free agency status this offseason, is he giving us an hint that he is moving to miami next year?

  • Jon

the number 6? i dunno about that lebron, y not the number 1…so like every time the ref calls a foul on him, or the opponents call out his number, they’ll be connecting Lebron James with being number 1.

  • Joe

Screw the LeBron, keep the 23 man…Thats your number…Jordan was great, yes, but so were so many others. I am not tryin to deny that Jordan didn’t change the game but did he ever lay down 100 points in a single game like Wilt the Stilt did or break all kinds of NBA records? For those not in the know Wilt wore the number 13, the same number worn by numerous players today such as Steve Nash…

Wilt still holds the record for most points in a single season, highest average of points per game in a single season, the most points in a single season as a rookie, the highest average of points in a single season as a rookie, the most points in a single game as a rookie, most games with 50 or more points throughout a career (118 to be exact), most games in a single season with 50 or more points (45), most consecutive games with 50 or more points (7), and theres about 5 more records to add to that list…

I know a lot of people will say “well, competition is tougher now then it was back then”, which is true, but facts are facts…Majority of todays records are from between the 60s and 80s…Jordan came to the NBA in ’84 and he really didnt do much his rookie year where Wilt was setting all sorts of records his rookie season….During the ’86-’87 season Jordan did become the league leader though, and has been for a total of 10 times…Besides for that Jordan does not hold many records besides for holding the record for highest average points per game in a career…

They say records are meant to be broken and even though we have all the greats out there they have yet to be broken…To me that says something…To me the GOAT is the Chairman of the Boards, Mr. Wilt Chamberlain…

  • mrmarquee

all these fakeass basketball fans on here saying that the greatest player EVER shouldn’t have his number permanently retired is just noodles. who cares what number lebron wears. he hasn’t even been around long enough to care himself that much. i had no problem with him wearing it but he’s doing the right thing by his(everybody on the court’s) idle. some of you dudes must have been born mid 90′s..

  • phou

MIKE IS THE GREATEST PLAYER TO EVER TOUCH THE ROCK AND TO EVER PLAY THE GAME. THERE WILL NEVER EVER EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD WILL THERE BE A BETTER PLAYER THEN HIM. KOBE AND LEBRON ARE THE CLOSEST ONES, BUT THEY STILL ARE NOT EVEN CLOSE. SO TO RETIRE MIKES NUMBER WILL PAY GREAT TRIBUTE TO THE MAN WHO INDIVIDUALLY CHANGED THE NBA AND EVERY ONE PLAYING THE GAME RIGHT NOW.

  • Paolo

LeBron is switching to #6 because #23 on the Nets is already retired, so he couldn’t have worn it there anyway

  • tiki

    CHOSEN ONE….no. 1…THAT’S IT!!

  • Saaul

the number 23 should only be retired in CHICAGO.

  • Paper Chasr_OSD

6 won’t work either of he switches to that. Bill Russell wore number six and if his number is not retired around the league then NO ONES’s number should be (for our younger readers look him up). 6 is also Dr. J’s number in (Michael Jordan’s Idol) and basically the person Jordan patterned his high flying ways after.

It’s cool to say that and act on it…but his desired number for next year is a lousy choice.

PREDICTION: Lebron James is a Jordan brand athlete next year! You heard it here 1st.

  • Mama

Who’d they name the Finals MVP trophy after? Oh, right, Mr. Bill Russell. Maybe because it’s so soon, but going Jackie Robinson for Mike doesn’t seem justified yet.

  • j

i agree to be only retired in chicago if ANYWHERE. lebron doesnt have to do that. either way he will be a beast. just not better than kobe lol. but lebron needs his own number, maybe it can get retired in the far future, especially with how good he plays now.

  • sneeakerduperman

    go 2 miami

  • mike

MUCH respect to lebron for even doing this. I think this is the right move.. MJ is the best 2 ever do it.ppl up their were talkn championships and watnot…it doesnt matter bout tht.a smoe joe who garbage could pick gud teams 2 play 4 and win 5 and 6 chips…GREATNESS=MICHAEL JORDAN.he shoulda went in the hof by himself..LEBRON I COMMEND U.

  • mike

lebron go 2 miami or dwade go 2 cleveland.. we needa shaq kobe mike scottie duo again.

  • greenmaker24

    craziness

  • mike

kobe the closest thing 2 MJ….ever….i think the way kobe playn right now he the second best player of all time.

  • neckbreakin216

so he switched one jordan # for another one. 6 is jordans olympic number.

  • PhuckYoOPINION

mj’s olympic number is 9 you moron and for that dude who said i brag too much i jut bought those red carpet lebrons for 293 and some change off osneaker.com————–my shoe game is sick as h1n1

  • JaeRocka

    very admirable of Bron..
    i respect it..
either way his jersey still gonna sell regardless of what # he switches 2..
    but hey…

  • Jra4lyfe

Lmao @ neckbreakin216…Jordan olympic number is 9…ignorant comment

  • jr_lyon

Nike is gonna have to change Lebron’s logo now. Won’t be able to use the LJ23 logo after this season. Lebron is gonna have to change his signature since he signs everything 23Lebron

  • flow

yeah i think lebron just made a very honoring decision and with that, thumbs up ‘bron. its a good idea that mike’s number will be hung up on every NBA stadium but i dont think Utah will do it. any opinion?

  • JaeRocka

I don’t know about every arena having MJ 23 hanging up…
Its good to respect his game, but he is NOT the ONLY GREAT player to the game..
    Just my POV..

but if another team wants to honor MJ, they have the right to. I don’t see this as being
    a norm in NBA arenas…again..

    Just my POV…

  • KBhomersLOL

Look at these Kobe homers LOL! can see they are just bunch of losers from their pointless comments. Kobe the second best? Kobe isn’t even in the top20 a-hole. Michael isn’t the only great player? Michael is the greatest d-ass. Should retire number 24? AHAHA. What did number 24 do for the game? for copying the greatest or for having the best supporting cast? what a bunch of garbages LMAO

  • R E E

I’m cool with having an opinion…but, C’MON. If you anybody cannot recognize the singular impact Michael Jordan has had on the game of basketball and sneaker culture…ADMIT YOURSELF TO A HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY.

    @ Joe –
Is that how you define GREATNESS…by how many records an individual holds?

I don’t have time to run down Michael Air Jordan’s stats as a 6’6 guard in an era that trumped the one Wilt The Stilt Chamberlain played in terms of competition…but, here’s the most important things you overlooked about Michael Jordan:

6 rings in 8 years (Two 3 PEATS!)
    2 gold medals
and an NCAA championship (which he won with a clutch shot like he’s done time and time again)
    smh

how you judge greatness is the influence they had on the game and the people.
Do these words ring a bell??
    AIR JORDAN…BE LIKE MIKE.
And it wasn’t HYPE. THIS DUDE WAS LEGIT! (refer to the short resume above)
And, let’s not forget from a sneakerhead perspective, Michael Jordan and AIR JORDANS are THE reason at least 75% of Generation Xers got into the shoe game in first place!!

The only record Wilt Chamberlain holds over Michael that I could give him dap for is that he slept with like every woman in the entire solar system. LOL. He was like a Basketball Playin’ Captain Kirk!
I don’t care if he scored 100 points in a game…he was a GIANT amongst FLEAS!

The only time anybody wanted to be like Wilt Chamberlain was on Halloween in the 80s to be his character, BOMBAATA from CONAN THE DESTROYER!! LMAO

and even then…you’d still get MISTAKEN for being SHO’ NUFF from THE LAST DRAGON!

    Anyway,

    Back to Lebron.
“I grew up watching Michael Jordan…idolizing Michael Jordan…” he said in the post game interview. It’s obvious, The manchild is now becoming a man and he wants to stake his claim in the form of a new badge. Whenever you THINK of the number 23, Michael Jordan is the first person that comes to mind…PERIOD. If you’re trying to establish your own identity as a basketball player, you can’t wear another warriors badge unless you TAKE his badge.

Last night for whatever reason he had an epiphany and despite all of his god given talents, he himself realized he has a looooooooooooong way to go before you can truly take his majesty’s crown and be KING.

  • Chad

look at it this way…..Gretzky’s number is retired league-wide isnt it?
so if Jordan is to ball what Gretzky is to hockey..just trying to put it in perspective

  • kara

man… it’s just a number.. kids these days

  • pumpactionfury2.0

another player number that is retired league wide is ! 99!!!

  • MJSF

    6>23 (on lebron)

    :)

  • jalapatra

should of changed his number to “Ocho Cinco”! lol

  • johnny qb

what’s interesting to me is it took him this long to realize he would never really make his own name with that number. just the basic fact of using that number says “i’m lining up BEHIND MJ”. now, he can say he’s gonna get in front of MJ.

gotta be his own player. this is just the final piece.

  • IAMTHESOUTH

actually Kobe wears 24 because hid dad wore 24

  • Clutch

I definitely believe that Michael Jordan has made a considerable contribution to game of basketball and believe that he should be honored in some way. With that said he is no Jackie Robinson and for him to get the same treatment by his respective league is Ludacris by far.

  • Clutch

Michael Jordan has made a tremendous contribution to the game of Basketball and yes I believe that he should be honored by the NBA. With that said Michael Jordan is No Jackie Robinson. Michael Jordan should not be honored by the NBA the same way that MLB has honored Jackie Robinson

  • Christian

They should retire 23, I mean what person has dominated the league in the modern era with 6 titles, 3 before he retired and 3 after he cam back…. HE WAS A BEAST

  • http://nicekicks.com/members/droned/ Dronedix

i think he should stick to 23 its his number he shouldnt give it up even though he isnt as good as michael either way its his number i know it was also michael and it means alot nowadays in the sneaker game 23

  • word is bond – thats it and thats all

Although Jackie Robinson was an incredible baseball player, his number is not retired league wide because of his on-field abilities. The MLB retired his number to pay respect to the man who broke down the color barrier and changed the game forever.
Michael is undoubtedly the best player the games has ever seen, and he did change the game, but he didn’t nothing that compares with the struggle Jackie faced.
As for LBJ, I’ve always thought that he should wear something other than 23. He’s gonna draw comparisons to Jordan no matter what he wears, but he will never surpass Jordan, and 23 will always be MJ’s, so why not start his own legacy with a new number. 6 will do jut fine. Winning the gold at the olympics was a pivotal moment in LeBron’s career. I really believe that he has been a different player since then. After seeing the work Kobe puts in day after day, LB realized he had to work to be the best. Suddenly he became a great defensive player, and has been carrying his team since then.
For logo’s expecting some sort of L6/Lb where the lowercase b looks like a 6 and vice versa

  • fistonclothing

my zoom soldier 2 UWR will cost some money in the future =)), those might be the first one that have the number 6 on it…. i will have to do more research lol

  • Cristo

As long as people recognize that retiring 23 league-wide is an acknowlegement for his ON-COURT accomplishments, then it should be all good.

Jackie Robinson was a PIONEER for minorities in the entire professional sports era we know today…Not only was he amazing on the field, but he opened the doors for many others to have THE OPPORTUNITY to pursue a professional sports career (I never saw him play, I’m only going by archives).

Jordan is the greatest basketball player ever, but not a pioneer for modern society like Jackie Robinson was. I just hope the “Jackie Robinson treatment” doesn’t get watered-down by the same treatment for Jordan.

After the HOF induction and speech, I just see MJ differently now, and he does not come off as an embassador for society like Jackie Robinson was….I see MJ more like a pioneer for sports marketing and media…Now that would be an interesting title up on the rafters of every NBA team!

  • Dame

Jordan is the greatest of all times all the good thing about it is he’s my generations superstar he’ll forever be my hero and I don’t even play basketball I’m a artist… He was jus a all around amazing player from his first NCAA championship to his last shot

  • db29

firstly neckbreakin216..jordan’s Olympic number was 9..not 6..jus look at the olympic 7′s. secondly i think this is just one more way lebron is slowing tryin to mind f%^k the idea that he is leaving cleveland. i thinking its all for marketing and legacy. he wants to make his own name in history and you can’t do that as 23*(#2). i also dont agree with the league wide retiring. Jackie Robinson broke down racial barriers in a much important way than jordan did. if we are goin to go off pure statistical brilliance you’re gonna have to retire oscar robertson, kareem abdul jabar, wilt chamberlin, pete maravich, karl malone, bill russell…crap alot of numbers are gonna go outta commision. his number is retired on 3 teams one of which he didnt play on….thats quite enough

  • got a life?

    change it ‘bron.

  • sneakrfan

i think the players should pick any number they want. it dont matter if you number 23 or not to be good what matter are your skillz. i think this dudes crazy. why would you want to retire such a famous number for? people on the outside are still going to vhave that number anyways. (outside of the NBA)

  • MARQUIS

    neckbreakin216 MJs olympic # is 9 not 6 pimpin

  • mac_09

dont change to 6,, change to like 25 or sumtin.

  • VinnyB

Selfish. Bron ain’t Air – not in game or sneaks. He ain’t Kobe either

  • Ariel

    nah 23

  • maine 23

man i’ll rock that 23 that 6 look lame

  • Jerronimo

Personally the number does not matter. Lebron is the next BIG thing since Kobe. Please believe that! i can dig the tribute to MJ. I doubt the league will retire the number (23) like they did for Jackie Robinson’s #42. It would be sick tho. Lebron should go to MIA if he wants to win. Jay-Z can’t give Lebron a ring in Jersey anymore than he can in Cleveland. No disrespect to Jay or anything but he is not on the court scoring. The Knicks have been garbage since Ewing left. Big UP to Nate Robinson tho…keep doing ya thang man! 206 in the house. D. Wade + Lebron= a future ring. How can the Knicks top that?

  • duke

mj the reson for 23 maybe the people behind the scenes told bron to wear it throwouy h.s for marketing and seels 23 does sells

  • Joseole23

    kobe is the shizzzz

  • DCSnkrHead

WHOEVER SAID LEBRON IS THE BEST IN THE NBA RIGHT NOW IS FOOOOOLISH.OBVIOUSLY IT`S KOBE BRYANT.NOW I USED TO HATE KOBE BECAUSE HE TRIED TO BE LIKE JORDAN SOOOOO MUCH.AFTER WHILE HE CHANGED HIS NUMBER,CREATED HIS OWN GAME WHICH I NOTICED IS VERRRRY SIMILAR TO JORDANS.SO I NOW KNOW HE IS IN THE BACKSEAT TO JORDAN WHILE JORDANS IN THE FRONT.I DON`T CARE WHAT YOU SAY CREATE A GOOD ARGUMENT TOWARDS KOBE THAT DENIES HE IS THESECOND COMING OF JORDAN.EVEN MIKE KNOWS HIMSELF AND HE HAS TO RESPECT THAT.COMPARE THE STATS,GAME FOOTAGE,SWAGGER,DOMINANCE,HE IS #24 a.k.a “THE BLACK MAMBA” WASN`T MIKE #23 “THE BLACK CAT”. LEBRON IS GREEEEEAAAAT AND THE NEXT-GEN BUT CHANGE YOUR NUMBER AND CREATE YOUR OWN LEGACY.LEBRON IS MORE OF A MAGIC JOHNSON TYPE PLAYER.LOOK IT UP.

  • VELVET

WHOEVER SAYS CHECK THE STATS AND THINKS KOBE LEADS IN THIS CATAGORY NEEDS TO CHECK THE STATS AGAIN! LABRON LEADS KOBE IN EVERY CATAGORY, SCORING BETTER SHOOTING PERCENTAGE, REBOUNDS, ASSIST, BLOCK SHOTS. WHAT STATS ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT? THIS GUY FILLS A STAT SHEET UP LIKE NO ONE. KOBE IS A PURE SCORER AND A GREAT PLAYER BUT BRON IS THE BEST ALL AROUND PLAYER AND WILL BE THE BEST ALL AROUND IN HISTORY WHEN ITS ALL SAID AND DONE!

  • aj from MO

bron should change to 25 it looks way better than 6. by the way KING James rules over the little mamba!

  • aj from MO

    or even better 69
