Converse WeaponOur weekly column Throwback Thursday took an extended vacation, but is back for another run with a bang.

Tonight, one of the greatest rivalries continues between the NBA Champion Boston Celtics and the MVP led Los Angeles Lakers.  The 1980′s were practically owned by the two teams.  All of the 10 NBA Finals from 1980-1989 featured either the Celts or the Lakers and the two met on the big stage in ’84, ’85, and ’87.

Converse, at the time, was the official outfitter of the NBA and endorser of three time MVP Larry Bird and later to be three time MVP Magic Johnson.  The two were part of an unforgettable ad campaign to promote the Converse Weapon.

    That’s when basketball was real! The days when teams sometimes had two hall of famers on the roster! Nowadays people get excited watching kobe and lebron gunning!Not impressed!

    I had da LAKERS pair but I gave’em away. I need to find out who I gave’em to so I can get’em back. I couldn’t find a throwback MAGIC JOHNSON jersey to go wit it. I hope they don’t cost alot when they retro these.

    i had the black/silver/white colorway, the lakers colorway and i had the white/red’s that were eventually pulled off the shelves in champs back in middle school, those were the days

    What’s interesting (sort of) to me is that the Lakers Weapon is the only 3 color Weapon. Why weren’t B. King’s a Blue/Orange/White for the Knicks, for example? Even though I was pulling for Boston as a kid, the Lakers remain my favorite color…something is just sickness about that purple/yellow/white combo.

    Man, I wore the Red & White in college! Great shoe for the time…a bit heavy, but for the time, a GREAT shoe! The Lakers colors were the BEST!!! Hands down!

    MAN I REMEMBER IT WAS 1985 AND MY BROTHER AND I WENT TO THE SHOE STORE WITH MY POPS AND BEGGED FOR THE WEAPONS. I WANTED THE MAGIC’S HE WANTED THE LARRY’S AND THE MAN CAME OUT THE BACK AND SAID WE DONT HAVE ANYMORE. I DAMN NEAR CRIED! HE CAME BACK OUT WITH THE RED/BLACK AIR JORDAN 1 AND WE SAT THEIR LIKE “WTF”. AT THE TIME MIKE WASNT LIKE MAGIC OR LARRY. MY POPS GOT THEM FOR US ANYWAY. WORE THEM TO THE BARBER SHOP THAT SAME DAY AND FOLKS WENT CRAZY. THE LOVE AFFAIR STARTED AND SINCE THEN I BEEN IN JAYS EVERYDAY. LOL
