Air Jordans Banned from NBA – 24 Year Anniversary

57 466

This year Jordan Brand and Nike have been celebrating 23 years of Air Jordans. Many could debate what was the true birth of the Air Jordan whether it was the designing of the Jordan 1, the first time he wore the shoes in the NBA, or the day that the NBA banned the shoes from the league.

This week on OSD, a trivia question was asked about the significance of today. It was 23* 24 years ago today, October 18th, that the Nike Air Jordans were banned from the NBA and a penalty for Michael Jordan wearing the shoes was set at $5,000 per game. Like with many Jordans, Michael wore them in the game before anyone else had the chance.

“On September 15th, Nike created a revolutionary new basketball shoe. On October 18th, the NBA threw them out of the game. Fortunately, the NBA can’t stop you from wearing them.

Air Jordans from Nike.”

* – Clearly I need to relearn simple subtraction.

Hey whats up ppl

  1. the reason was becasuse they felt like they were special shoes and he was cheating.. in that time nobody had their own shoe brand madde so they thought the shoes would help him so they banned the shoes from the nba… of course that later changed when many other barnds started making shoes for different players… thats how the story goes, and of course they would let someone play in the retro 1′s today!! how many people you see with their own shoe from a brand??!!! STUPID QUESTION!!

  2. Zane,

I am sorry but that wasn’t necessary to call someone’s comment out like that. Those shorts were almost as short as Stockton’s and the dude was making a joke.

I could say a TON about your explanation about why the shoes were banned, but that’s not my place to do that.

  3. Ha, Zane, you are 100% wrong kid. Actually, you bought the hype that Nike tried to sell by running these “banned” campaigns. They were banned from the NBA because of the shoes colors, not because it gave some competitive advantage…

comment 4 was LAME as HELL!!

    *_*

  4. ^^yo zane.. thats not why they banned them its because the official NBA rules say the shoe has to have the team colors and “some semblance” of white on it and the only white on the bred 1s was the midsole and they didn’t feel that was enough… so it really wasn’t that stupid of a question

  5. wow by the time i posted my least comment there were already 2 others that weren’t there before calling zane out! lol

  6. never trust wikipedia, thats probably the worst resource website around.
Anyone can edit what anyone says and put their worthless 2 cents into it and make it completely false.
But, back to the topic at hand.
I feel jordans being banned is what started the trend with them..It kind of set the tone for peoples sneaker interests nowadays.

  7. since when does lil zane leave comments on nicekicks…just like the rap games zane, this ones stupid as hell…getting his info from wikipedia???…get out of the shoe game NOW!!!

  8. SMH/ zane you get your info from wikipedia??? never admit that out loud. a 6 year old can edit that website. dont use it unless you really have to. its good for some reference but i wouldn’t trust anyone on that talking about Jordans. what sneaker head edits on wikipedia? a lame, thats who. and i agree, i dont think its your place to tell people whose comments are lame and whose aren’t. but all i want to know is why it looks like mike waxed his legs then rubbed baby oul all over his calves. is that the secret? brb, i’ll check and see if my vert goes up 20 inches…

  9. CAN ANY OF U GUYS TELL ME WHERE I CAN FIND THESE AJ1s other than flightclub?? I know they’re worth it, but i don’t feel like droppin $500 plus ‘em??

  10. Wikipedia is messed… but not so much these days. They have a new feature that helps keep editing clean and the edit is only posted publicly if it has hyperlinks to proper sources. However, the feature doesn’t help when the edit looks like it actually has something to do with the article (ex. they can catch it if you write, “Jordan’s shoes SUCK” on the Nike page, but it wouldn’t catch, “Nike overprices sneakers”) It’s like a robot on their site :S

But anyways, aside from whack comments & sources, the Jordan legacy is best sneaker line ever HANDS DOWN.

I’m back with a new question: (2 actually)
    1. IS PICKYOURSHOES.COM LEGIT? &
    2. Are all CDP packaged in the same kind of box? Or does every unique CDP have a unique box design to it as well??

    THANKS!

P.S. NEVER GET YOUR INFO FROM FAKE, NON-SNEAKER DEDICATED SITES LIKE WIKIPEDIA.

SOOOOOFFFFT!!! REAL RESEARCH GOES DOWN ON SITE LIKE NICEKICKS, DUNNO!!

  11. Man i love that the keep makig the 1′s in different colorways!!
i got them olympics and i’m tryna cop sum limited edition lasers!! the retro 1 is the hardesdest RETRo in MY PERSPECTIVE!!

  12. I THOUGHT THESE WERE BANNED CUZ THEY DIDN’T HAVE ENOUGH WHITE ON THEM, BUT NIKE DIDN’T CARE PAYING $5K FOR MIKE TO PLAY IN THEM. NIKE WAS REALLY SMART ON DOING THAT. THAT’S BECAUSE NO OTHER SHOE CO. DID THAT BEFORE FOR A PLAYER. NOT ADIDAS, NOT CONVERSE AND NOT REEBOK. NOW NIKE JUST SITS BACK AND RELAXES WHILE WE JORDAN-HEADS, HUNT THESE DOWN AND PAY WHATEVER AMOUNT OF $$$ FOR ANY EXISTING PAIRS THAT WERE MADE IN THE PAST YEARS, OR WE CROSS OUR FINGERS FOR NIKE OR NOW JORDAN BRAND TO RE-RETRO THEM ONCE MORE…!

  13. Please tone down the flaming. There are places for that, but not here.

It wasn’t that the shoes were black or didn’t have enough white, it was that they did not match the uniform or any other of his teammates. Either way, the fact that Jordan and Nike decided to blatantly disobey the rules made the shoes that much more special.

  14. this commercial makes me crave a pair of 1′s, how could you not want them after whatching this & then seeing him play in them… CLASSICS!!!!!!!

  15. why dont yall LEAVE this Zane guy alone!! I thought the topic was about the aniversary of the shoes being banned!! He made a MISTAKE!!! LEAVE IT ALONE!!

  16. The flaming of Zane is going mad overboard, but homie brought it on himself calling someone out like he did while having his facts twisted. You only get what you give.

  17. Jordans weren’t the shoe that was banned. The air ships were banned. The date the shoes were banned were before the bulls even started playin that season. If nethin it was the. Bred colorway that was banned

  18. ACTUALLY, COMMENT #3 WAS VERY FUNNY, BACK IN THOSE DAYS, EVERYONE WORE SHORT SHORTS. EVEN MJ HIMSELF. IMAGINE KOBE AND LEBRON WEARING THESE TOADY, OH, HELL NO!!!!!!!!!! :)

  19. TO COMMENT #25,

MATT, ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THE MATCHING UNIFORMS? BECAUSE IF THE BULLS WORE THE ROAD UNIS, THEN THE BANNED 1′S WOULD MATCH, RIGHT? I READ IN SOLE COLLECTOR THAT IT WAS IN FACT NOT ENOUGH WHITE ON THEM, THEY WERE TOO “DEVILISH”, THAT’S WHY COMMISIONER STERN BANNED THEM. AM I ACCURATE?

  20. Hi guys, I’m French, I don’t speak English very well and I’m really sorry about that but I saw this on Wikipedia:
“The NBA banned the shoe from the league in response, but Michael Jordan wore them anyway, racking up serious fines of up to $5000 a game. Nike, of course, was more than happy to pay these to keep the shoes in the game and in the public eye. All this controversy and Jordan???s spectacular performance that year served to put the Air Jordan line on the road to becoming a household name. It also sold its first shoes for less than a dollar a pair.”

Could you tell me please what does the last sentence mean? Does it mean that the first produced pairs of Jordan 1 were on the market at less than 1$? How was it possible?

Thanks in advance for your response.

  21. in regards to comment #34 (oldjumpman):

actually, kobe DID where short shorts in a game, this past season my Celtics played the lakers, and in that game (for the first half at least) the fakers wore retro uni’s which included VERY short shorts. imo bynum looked the funniest.

  22. Zane! I see my comments on the Kim D freestyle didn’t stop you from makin a azz of ya self now the rest of the world can see it too.

  23. Koma, you cant trust wikipedia. so i wouldn’t count on it. but back then, you could get a pair of jordans EXTREMELY CHEAP. i’d say maybe 50? matt can you help me out if you know?

  24. oldjumpman, for your comment #35.
the reason they fined him was the reason matt said, it didn’t match his teammates sneakers which(correct me if im wrong) all had to match eachothers.
That and like whateveryone else has said, not enough white.
just stupid NBA rules..imagine if they were going like that nowadays, we would never have seen some of the classics.

any of the jordan playoff’s, or even if they regulated it in the olympics. we would have NEVER even have seen the olympic 6′s or 7′s.
what would be the world without them?

  25. BK-BIG JAY-718,

The original Nike Air Jordans were cheap in today’s numbers retailing for $65; however, if you adjust that number for inflation, that works out to being $130-$135. Now the following years when they dropped the Air Jordan 2, Nike caught a lot of heat from the public when they priced the shoes at $100. In today’s dollars, that works out to just about $200.

  26.
