Ernie Davis Rocked Nike?

Ernie Davis who led Syracuse to the national title in 1959 and was the first black Heisman trophy winner in history was enshrined Saturday. The statue which was un-veiled has Ernie rocking some Nike’s and a modern day helmet, now the helmet is one issue but another is this. Nike wasn’t even formed when Davis played in college during his tenure. The sculptor said he was given details and football gear that would be true to the the legendary figure.

Controversy has stirred up and some are calling to have the shoes removed and to make the image of the statue more accurate. Check the pictures, what do you guys think?

Definitely a F*up. The artist didn’t know. The people that gifted the statue should have done the research and give the sculptor the correct information. Change the shoes and the helmet to make it right people.

I think the artist is at fault here. Where did they find this guy? He’s clearly not very thorough. I think it should be changed to be accurate. What a total mess up.
Also I’m sure the committee that paid for it saw mock ups. It doesn’t say much for them.

To really make this a tribute to Ernie they got to actual gear he wore doing his time and lose the controversy associated with this wrong gear because if they leave it that will always be attached with what should be a great tribute.

To cmt 8. You need read the article and read it clearly. Before you go and point your finger and wrongfully accusing someone. The artist IS NOT at fault. The person who PROVIDED him with details and football gears for the statue is at fault.

Making this modern is a stupid idea…. It’s not like this will even be modern in 50 years, there will be newer, updated helmets and nike might not be so popular. Then the statue will just be inaccurate, not modern.

Those who supplied the artist information are to blame for this. I doubt the artist followed football or even knew who this guy was. He just did his job, to make a sculpture.
