Team USA Logo Controversy

Nike just released photos of the US Olympic Basketball team, but there has been a little bit of controversy spreading online about the placement of Dwight Howard’s hand and Coach K’s foot. Dwight Howard is the only USA Team member who is signed with a non-Nike affiliated brand.

Those are the facts, but with any controversy all that matters are opinions. Do you think that Nike, being the official sponsor of the USA Olympic Team and host of this photo shoot, intentionally placed Dwight Howard where he is with Coach K’s foot obstructing his foot to block the Adidas logos? You make the call after the jump.

    yes sir Dwayne Wade is signed to Converse…so all the speculation is absolutely ridiculous…and even if it was the case, why should Nike give Adidas free advertising anyway?

    It is definately somethign done on purpose. With the exception of Wade and Kid, the whole line appears to be going in height order. Chris Bosh here is standing taller than Howard, but he is placed where Coach K can block his shoe.

    come on now…converse is owned by Nike…which basically makes him a Nike athlete. i see that guy in the employee store every time the heat are in town to play the blazers.

    and again. every thing that is done in the photo is definitely done on purpose.

    This may be clear product and advertising placement to block out the shoes that dwight be sporting cause they adidas. but still his hand is covering the nike swoosh on his shorts but the swoosh on his jersey is still showing they could have had him turned like bosh so you couldnt see the swoosh on the shorts either so im not quite sure whats going on???

    being that what is being promoted is afterall basketball we are all a shoe community and we self-proclaimed “sneakerheads” nike knows that the eye is gonna shoot straight to what has become the most essential piece of equiptment in basketball, i’ll give you a hint it isn’t the basketball. to coin a catch=phrase “it’s the shoes”. being said after years of marketing nike understands their consumers, they know that “we” the collective sneaker community doesn’t really care about kobe, kidd, lebron, wade, paul melo, etc… except for what they are wearing on their feet. through aggresive and strategic marketing sneaker companies i.e nike has transferred the talent of the player and has equated it to the shoe. remember those jordan ads? ” it’s gotta be the shoe” so the consumer feels that they can be “like mike” if they wore his shoes. in the advent of his- airness absence from the game we the consumer have transferred the same feeling we felt for jordan and placed our faith in the “shoe” whatever shoe it may be. nike is protecting their brand, they sell and boy do they sell shoes, but worldwide soccer is a bigger sport and worldwide adidas rules the shoe game. if you doubt my theory on shoe conditioning just take note the next time when you are out in public, if you see someone who catches your eye do you find yourself checking to see what kinda shoes they are rocking? do you tend to judge their style or lack of style depending on their shoe game? hmmmm? just a lil food for thought.

    and to respond to niko bellic i believe that the olympic team is sorta like baseballs all- star game the fans still have a say in the matter, but for those of you who are too young to remember in 1992 barcelona isaiah thomas ( who happened to be a better player than coach ever) was nominated to play on the dream team. jordan allegedly threatned to pull out if isaiah played,(jordan and isaiah had a beef going on for years) with the jordan threat, nike, coca cola ,mcdonalds, and mars/m&m’s who all sponsored jordan said they would stand behind him, and also pull out and that meant a lot of lost $$$$$$ for the olympic games, the i.o.c (international olympic commitee) and the everyone and everything connected to the olympics the city of barcelona included . isaiah thomas was suspiciously dumped from dream team usa, and the rest is history. so think about that niko

    i haven’t seen too many comments on this, but it’s a horrible pic from a composition standpoint… just so we can see all the logos… they made every guy look like an amputee…. Kidd has the worst angle of em all

    JumpmanJr., the type of ball Howard is holding isn’t at question, it’s the fact that the way Howard is holding his hand, is obstructing the view of the Nike swoosh on his shorts, possibly in retaliation to Nike wanting Coach K’s foot in front of his Adidas kicks; OR due to the fact he’s an Adidas athlete…

    Which makes much more sense.

    Oh yeah, in reference to some past comments, about MJ, etc. and a few 1992 Dream Teamers “covering a logo” by draping the American flag over their shoulder during the medal presentation – I watched some old games, on YouTube just because I’ve been feeling a little itch for ’92 basketball (thanks to Slam’s Olympic ’08 magazine) Jordan and other Nike athletes didn’t cover up any logos, due to contract and business issues.

    There was no logo on the warm-ups to be covered.

    Man…Nike needs to get kicked between the shoulder blades….I am so tired of them flooding the market. They are so many good shoes out there now, there is no point on doing it anymore. I only buy Nike shoe if they are on sale. I have only paid retail twice in my lifetime for a pair of overrated, overpriced Nike shoes.

    this is for all those dumb people who are still confused about the shoe companies: NIKE OWNSS-Converse and Jordan, Jordan brand was started by Nike and Converse was bought by Nike. Get through your thick brains, you so-called dumb sneakerheads.

    Same deal as Jordan on the original Dream Team, If you look @ any pictures tooken, MJ always covered the champion logo. When you are endorsed, you are passing off goodwill for promotions of makers products. The logo must be fully visible to show good will (which In Howard’s case, you do not see the full Nike Logo, but instead a side view). When the original dream team won gold, there were allot of athletes with american flags draped over their sweatsuits, not because of their patriotism, but because it would violate terms & conditions. Imagine Jordan wearing a champion sweatsuit while placing around a gold medal around his neck.

    It’s like this: Did Nike do this on purpose? Yes. But should you be pissed at them for it? No. I mean, that would be like someone showing you how to make more money and then telling you not to do it. The fact of the matter is we give Nike the power to do stuff like this. By buying thier products as much and as often as we do, we’re supporting sweat shops, we’re drastically raising the price of sneakers, we’re letting Nike intentionally keep demand high. And don’t get me wrong, I’m not a martyr. I’ve got an easy 70 pairs of retros and originals and I’m still gonna run out and grab the next pair. And so are you. Let’s just not kid ourselves.     There are contract stipulations for Howard from Adidas possibly.That’s why he covers the NIKE logo on the shorts. Of course NIKE ain’t gone let that sneaker in the shot

    ok the only thing that is unclear is if his hand is blockin the nike logo because addidas wanted him too.. or if its just a coinkydink cuz i doubt nike would want to block their own logo..the shoe is understandable but not their own logo

    if it was addidas idea..than we have a nice little battle goin on between the top two sneaker brands.
